Easy & Short Hikes


Lion Mountain Trail - 2.6 Miles | 314 ft. Elevation Gain | Avg. Time: 1 hr


Highlights include great views at the overlook, gentle terrain, and dog-friendly access. Challenges noted are popularity leading to crowds and some areas of limited shade. Recommendations include visiting early and being mindful of dogs.


Beaver Lake Trail - 3.7 Miles | 472 ft. Elevation Gain | Avg. Time: 1.5 hr


The Beaver Lake Loop offers a scenic journey through pristine landscapes and beautiful forests. This trail features several lakes and numerous viewpoints along the way. As you reach the top of the ridge, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of Whitefish Lake and Beaver Lake. Both lakes are home to mergansers and loons.



Moderate Hikes


Reservoir Trail [Whitefish Valley Lookout] - 3 Miles | 666 ft. Elevation Gain | Avg. Time: 1.5 hr


Highlights include great views, well-marked paths, and a variety of scenery. Challenges are steep climbs and mountain bikers. Starting early and staying aware of bikers is advised.


This hike continues beyond the lookout and can be used to go to the summit of Big Mountain, totaling 11+ miles.


Difficult Hikes


Danny On Trail (Summit of Big Mountain) - 8.1 Miles | 2,066 ft. Elevation Gain | Avg. Time: 4.5 hr


The Danny On Trail in Whitefish, Montana, is a popular 7-mile round-trip hike offering stunning views of the Flathead Valley, Whitefish Lake, and distant peaks of Glacier National Park. Starting at the base of Whitefish Mountain Resort, the trail winds through lush forests and wildflower-filled meadows, with interpretive signs along the way. Hikers can take a scenic gondola ride down or up to shorten the trek. This trail is a favorite for its accessibility, breathtaking vistas, and seasonal beauty, making it a must-do for locals and visitors alike.


Since this hike takes you to the summit of Big Mountain (Whitefish's Ski Resort), you can cut this hike in half and take the chairlift up or down.



Standard Peak (1 hr Drive from Downtown Whitefish) - 6 Miles | 1,955 ft. Elevation Gain | Avg. Time: 3.75 hrs


The hike to Standard Peak near Whitefish, Montana, is a lesser-known but rewarding adventure for those seeking solitude and panoramic views. This approximately 8-mile round-trip trail ascends through dense forests and alpine meadows, eventually reaching the summit of Standard Peak. From the top, hikers are treated to sweeping vistas of the Flathead Valley, surrounding mountain ranges, and even glimpses of Glacier National Park on clear days. With moderate difficulty and fewer crowds, Standard Peak offers a peaceful escape into nature and a chance to experience Montana’s beauty off the beaten path.
